What is Inclusive Education?

Inclusive education is a model where all students, regardless of their background, disability, or any other characteristic that could be used to discriminate against them are welcomed and accepted in age-appropriate general education classrooms. Evidence-based instructional practices are used to ensure that all learners can access the curriculum.

Inclusive schools and educators genuinely believe in the abilities of ALL students. They promote and practice equity by valuing diversity in the classroom and seek to create welcoming school environments, engaging classrooms, and setting high expectations and attainable goals for all learners.

Inclusive education is not a one-size-fits-all approach; it requires individualized planning and support to meet the unique needs of each student. Thus, inclusive education necessitates ongoing professional development for teachers and other stakeholders to build their knowledge and skills in working with diverse learners. In addition, inclusive education demands ongoing collaboration and communication among all stakeholders to ensure that the needs of all students are being met. Inclusive education is a complex and ongoing process that requires reflection, evaluation, and improvement to ensure that all students receive the education they deserve.
