We recently wrapped up an engaging and thought‑provoking At Risk Community of Practice Math session, where educators from across the community came together to deepen their understanding of how students transition from multiplication to fractions. The session highlighted how intentional use of visual models—especially bar diagrams—can strengthen conceptual understanding and support learners who benefit from concrete and semi‑concrete representations.

A Space for Collaboration and Professional Learning
It was energizing to see educators share strategies, discuss challenges, and reflect on their students’ needs. Sessions like this remind us that supporting at‑risk learners requires:
Purposeful scaffolding
Rich visual representations
Clear and consistent mathematical language
Opportunities to explore concepts across concrete, semi‑concrete, and symbolic levels
The conversation underscored how essential it is for teachers to feel confident in using these tools—and to know when they are developmentally appropriate.
Thank You for Joining Us
Thank you to everyone who attended, contributed, and engaged so thoughtfully in the session. Your dedication to supporting students—particularly those who struggle—continues to strengthen our community of practice.
This session was open to all educators and professionals, and we encourage you to share the recording with colleagues or networks who may find the content valuable. The more we build shared understanding around effective math instruction, the stronger the support we offer our learners.
